Inspiring the next generation of Illam children
The latter part of this year has seen a stream of inspiring visitors, outings to arts and cultural events and celebrations of those people dear to the Illam’s heart.
A highlight for many of the children was an educational trip into Madurai that saw them spend the morning learning about the benefits and importance of trees in the Botany Department at the Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women. The afternoon was then spent at the newly opened Kalaignar Centenary Library, where they spent hours devouring books in the children’s section! And finally, the evening provided an opportunity to purchase a book for themselves at the 11th annual book fair at Thamukkam. What a treat! Books of all sorts were brought back to the Illam; biographies, quiz books, fiction and non-fiction. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to gain an appreciation of the importance of libraries and books, not only for learning but for pure enjoyment.
The 37th year of the Illam was celebrated on the 25th of September, with special visitors, including Illam alumni, a vibrant cultural performance and a delicious dinner arranged for the children.
Jean Watson’s birthday was commemorated on October 28th, with traditional oil lamps lit and a beautiful rangoli artwork was created before Jean’s portrait.
