Sustainable energy sources bring huge benefits to the Illam
Walking around the Illam campus in the evening just became a lot safer! With a grant from ‘Housing 4 More’ the Illam recently had solar street lights installed around the girls and boys homes, as well as lighting the pathway from the Illam entrance gate to the home. This has had the added benefit of allowing the children to spend evenings outside to study and play sports.
Continuing with the solar theme, a new solar hot water heater has been installed on the rooftop of the girl’s home, enabling a continuous hot water supply for cooking and domestic purposes at the home.
In addition to these sustainable improvements on the Illam campus, a new bio-gas plant has been installed, cutting the fuel expenses of the Illam dramatically. The funding for the plant comes from a generous donation, with a quarter of the costs being covered by Mr. Jothi Raj and the remainder from the Illam funds. These are all helping to work towards the long term goal of the Illam being as self-sufficient and sustainable as possible.
